THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A rare pleasant sunshine in a monsoon evening spread over the Lourde Forane Church here to welcome Mar George Alencherry, Major Archbishop of Syro Malabar Church on Saturday. A heavily packed gathering and a galaxy of religious and political personas lined up on the dais to accord reception to the new head of Syro Malabar Church.Every speaker complimented the Major Archbishop in brief, concise tones perfectly following the cue of Malankara Archbishop Mar Cleemis Catholica Bava who exhorted the long array of co-speakers to make it short to avoid the tedium.In response to the reception, George Alencherry defined his new role as that of a combined leadership. "Mine is not a singular responsibility. Everyone will have their own roles to play. Our mission is to discover the good in ourselves and thereby bolster the existence of God,’’ he said. On the occasion Finance Minister K M Mani quoted lines from Bible to hail George Alencherry. "George Alencherry was living a quiet and peaceful life in Thuckalay. It was then that he was called upon by the God to perform a new mission. This honour is a reward for the love he had for the almighty. He has always been a deep believer in God and humanity,’’ said the Minister.Latin Catholic Thiruvananthapuram Archbishop Susai Pakiam spoke with warmth and humour as he wished George Alencherry all the god’s grace in his future pursuits. “I am here after a long journey from Rome. I was hoping to get some rest in the evening. When I eagerly asked my secretary if there is any scope of rest, he told me that Major Archbishop is coming. The moment I heard it, all my tiredness vanished,’’ he laughed and then added; ‘’George Alencherry has always had God’s grace with him although his life. Although he has to be always aware of this new responsibility, God will give him the strength to accomplish his tasks,’’ he said.
