'Hope Somebody Will Listen': Danish Diplomat's Video Spurs Clean-Up Near Embassy In Delhi

Denmark’s top diplomat in India sparked action from New Delhi’s civic body after a video of him showcasing a garbage dump outside the embassy building spread on social media.

Standing by the Danish embassy, Ambassador Freddy Svane on Wednesday complained about the trash-strewn road, urging authorities to address the issue promptly. “Lovely and green New Delhi. Many words but no action. Saddened by this @DenmarkinIndia@CMODelhi @LtGovDelhi,” the Danish diplomat said in a post on X, as he shared a 30-second video.

“Welcome to the great, green, and trashy New Delhi. Here we have the Danish Embassy, and the Greek Embassy is over there. This should be a service lane, but you can see it’s full of trash, and people are just dumping whatever they like. I hope somebody will listen to this and take action. No more nice words, just action. Dhanyawaad,” the envoy said in the video.

Hours after Svane’s plea, the New Delhi Municipal Committee swiftly responded, dispatching officials to clean up the area. Visuals from the site depicted Svane alongside NDMC representatives, showcasing the collaborative effort to address the environmental concern. Svane’s call for cleanliness resonated online, with some social media users debating the responsibility for addressing the issue in the diplomatic area.

NDMC or MCD?

“Not only the diplomatic area, but the entire city of Delhi urgently requires a comprehensive initiative to address its waste management issues. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) seems to be operating without direction, resulting in a chaotic situation,” said one of the users on X.

“It appears that there is a lack of cohesive planning among Delhi’s authorities on how to effectively manage waste. At this rate, there is a risk of Delhi becoming one of the largest junkyards in the world,” the user added. “Embassy area under NDMC under Central govt, not MCD,” said another user.
