New Delhi: As the political crisis in Karnataka continues, senior BJP leader in charge of the state, Yashwant Sinha, is camping in Bangalore to patch up the rift with ruling partner JD-S.
Sinha is scheduled to meet JD-S patriarch Deve Gowda shortly. The BJP wants the JD-S to hand over the Chief Minister's post on October 3 under a power-sharing agreement.
But murder charges levelled against Chief Minister Kumaraswamy by a BJP minister has given JD-S the perfect excuse to go back on the deal.
On Friday, Kumaraswamy expressed annoyance with the BJP for not taking any action against its minister B Sriramulu. The state BJP, on its part, continues to press its claim on the CM’s post.
BJP ministers in the Kumaraswamy Cabinet will meet on October 1 to decide their strategy once the results of the urban local body polls are out. The elections for 209 local bodies was held on Friday.
On Friday, Chief Minister Kumaraswamy had denied media reports that he would step down on October 3 to hand over power to the coalition partner BJP as per the pre-government formation agreement.
Media reports attributing to Chief Minister had earlier claimed that Kumaraswamy would be demitting office on October 3. Speaking to reporters at his official residence ‘Krishna’, the CM
denied making any such statement.
“I never said that I would be resigning on October 3 as reported in a section of the media. The issue will be decided only after the meeting of Janata Dal (Seculiar) legislators on September
30,” he said.
Kumaraswamy clarified that he had only stated that the issue of transfer of power would be decided only after September 30.
Replying to a question, he said majority of the party leaders were mounting pressure on him not to demit office and he would take a final decision only after the process of local body elections was over. .
The Chief Minister said the matter would be discussed in detail at the legislator's meeting. As per the pre-government formation agreement between JD(S) and the BJP, the two parties would hold the Chief Ministership for 20 months each before the next elections.
Kumaraswamy, son of JD(S) President and former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, became the Chief Minister for the first term.
Deputy Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, however, said he is confident that the differences would be sorted out soon. Yediyurappa is scheduled to meet both Deve Gowda and Kumaraswamy soon on issues raised by some BJP Ministers and leaders affecting the transfer of power in the state.
Yediyurappa said, “We will have good results and that will allow the government to continue for the next 20 months. No difference between JD(S) and the BJP and together we will run the government. The results will prove the importance of BJP.”
