Eight wins for Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling picture La La Land provides an even higher profile as the musical comedy arrives in cinemas.
Best Picture, Best Director and Best Original Screenplay all went to Damien Chazelle's La La Land, whose North American wide release commences from December 16, 2016.
The imaginative tale of career and personal highs and lows was also announced as the Broadcast Film Critics Association's chosen winner in the categories of Best Cinematography, Best Production Design, Best Editing, Best Song ("City of Stars"
performed by Stone and Gosling,) and Best Score (Justin Hurwitz's OST.)
Releasing the week of December 9 in limited US theaters as well as in South Korea, Singapore, and select other territories, "La La Land" is also set for a December 16 debut in India, from December 22 in the Netherlands, and then takes in European and other regions on a wider scale throughout January, including Germany, Spain, the UK and Ireland the week of January 13, Brazil from January 19, France and Belgium from January 25, and Hong Kong on January 26.
It's already been named one of the top ten films of the year by both the American Film Institute and National Board of Review, following September wins at the Toronto and Venice film festivals, accolades which bode well ahead of the Golden Globes on January 7 and the Oscars on February 26, 2017.
Also in film at the 22nd Critics' Choice Awards, Manchester by the Sea won three times over as Casey Affleck was given the Best Actor award, Lucas Hedges received the Best Young Actor / Actress accolade and Kenneth Lonergan, who also directed, shared Best Original Screenplay with Damien Chazelle.
Jacqueline Kennedy moment-in-time biopic Jackie was another three-time winner: Natalie Portman won Best Actress, with Best Costume Design and Best Hair & Makeup also going to feature staff.
Denis Villeneuve's alien invasion treatment Arrival, starring Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forest Whitaker, won Best Adapted Screenplay and Best Sci-Fi / Horror Movie, and was one of four double winners.
Irreverent DC Comics comedy Deadpool came away with Best Comedy and Best Actor in a Comedy for leading man Ryan Reynolds and, likewise, Mel Gibson comeback Hacksaw Ridge pulled off a double in its own category with wins for Best Action Movie and Best Actor in an Action Movie (Andrew Garfield.)
Six remaining film awards on the night of December 11, 2016, were distributed among Elle, Fences, Florence Foster Jenkins, Suicide Squad, The Jungle Book and Zootopia.
It was Margot Robbie that assured Suicide Squad of its Critics Choice Awards win, her portrayal of DC Comics character Harley Quinn clinching Best Actress in an Action Movie; co-starring with Denzel Washington in race relations drama "Fences," Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress, while Meryl Streep was awarded Best Actress in a Comedy for biopic "Florence Foster Jenkins."
Paul Verhoeven-directed French thriller Elle starring Isabelle Huppert, won Best Foreign Language Film, Zootopia won Best Animated Feature, and Disney's The Jungle Book won Best Visual Effects.
