In a ray of hope for the conflict-ridden Manipur, Tualniang Niamgsianching of Churachandpur, a Kuki, who inadvertently crossed the buffer zone and entered a Meitei-dominated area, was protected and sent safely to her area, notwithstanding the clash between the two communities. The development assumes significance as two days ago, officer Shrin Chingtham Anand was killed in Moreh, leading to deployment of more troops.
Since the start of the conflict on May 3, the two groups have been separated by a buffer zone. The community members stick to their areas, with the buffer zone only being crossed by pangals (Muslim drivers) and journalists, that, too, only after Aadhaar card checks.
On October 31, at 9.40 am, Niangsianching, 43, daughter of Siektinkam Singson of Monglienphai, Churachandpur, was found loitering around in Saiton Haiyaikon Leikai, Bishnupur district.

However, local Meira Paibis or women leaders protected her and handed over to Bishnupur Police, 169 CRPF and 2 Mahar Regiment. She was then taken to the officer-in-Charge of Women PS Churachandpur after observing formalities.
An officer from administration told News18: “There was no violence in the past one-and-a-half months. The officer’s death had shocked us all. But the way Meira Paibis helped the Kuki woman return to Churachandpur gives us hope. At times, people from Churachandpur have also helped the other group.”
Experts say the development has once again underscored the need for dialogue between the communities through peace committees, which have already been formed.
