Tatas to get Singur plot on Friday
The West Bengal Government will hand over the Sangur land to the Tatas on Friday.

Kolkata: Undeterred by the flurry of protests and political turmoil in the state, the West Bengal Government on Wednesday announced its decision to hand over the Singur land to the Tatas on Friday for its proposed car manufacturing unit.

"We will hand over the Singur land to the Tatas on Friday," West Bengal Industries Minister Nirupam Sen told journalists on Wednesday.

Earlier, a determined West Bengal Chief Minister, Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, had announced that his government would hand over the Singur land to the Tatas irrespective of what might come.

The Government decision came hours after the Calcutta High Court took strong exception to the two-day general strike called by Trinamool Congress in West Bengal to press for her demand for relocation of the Tatas' car project in Singur.

While the Trinamool Congress called off the strike immediately after the court verdict, party leader Mamata Banerjee refused to budge from her demand for relocation of the car project. Announcing that the strike was being "postponed for the time being," Mamata said the decision was taken following a request from members of the Christian community in view of the Christmas.

West Bengal has already experienced three general strikes this month. Banerjee, however, said her hunger strike, which entered its 17th day on Wednesday, would continue till the state government returns the acquired farmland at Singur.
