Srinagar and other major towns of the valley have been virtually sealed as police and CRPF forces have set up additional road blockades, check points, besides intensifying patrolling, frisking, area domination and surprise search and cordon operations.
"We have got inputs that militants are planning major strikes like car bomb blasts, suicide attacks, grenade throwing and IED explosions to disrupt the Independence day celebrations," CRPF spokesman Prabakar Tripathy told PTI.
"The extraordinary steps to thwart any attempt by the militants to disrupt the Independence day celebrations are taken by the authorities in the larger interest of the people," he said, and appealed for public cooperation.
The business community and residents of the areas in the close vicinity of Bakshi stadium, the venue of the main function in the state, have expressed displeasure over the frequent search and cordon operations, alleging that the move has badly affected their business activities.
A police spokesman said stringent security arrangements have been made in the backdrop of the fact that infiltration from across the border has suddenly increased this year compared to the corresponding period ending July last year.
