NCW asks Odisha to recommend CBI probe into doctor's death

Bhubaneswar: Unhappy over the probe by Crime Branch of state police into the mysterious death of a lady doctor in Puri in 2012, the National Commission for Women (NCW) on Wednesday suggested Odisha government to recommend a CBI probe into the matter.

"We do not feel the state police is undertaking investigation into the death case involving a lady doctor in right way. Therefore, we suggest Odisha government to recommend a CBI probe into the matter," NCW chairperson Mamata Sharma told an Odia news channel in Delhi.

The NCW chairperson's statement was based on the field visit of Commission member Charu Walikhanna, who visited the state in April. The railway police had recovered the body of lady ayush doctor Madhavilata Pradhan from railway track at Malatipatpur in Puri on October 12, 2012.

While mystery shrouds the death of the lady doctor, police suspect she committed suicide on the railway track. She was transferred from Brahmagiri area of Puri district to Malatipatpur area a few days before her death.

"It can safely be concluded that the present case is an appropriate case where the investigation by the police authorities is not in the proper direction and in order to do complete justice in the case, it would be prudent and advisable to transfer the investigation to an independent agency like CBI," said the NCW report.

The report also observed "...there is an attempt to obstruct inquiry by the Commission in order to protect the ruling party MLA."

Brahmagiri MLA and BJD Youth wing president Sanjay Dasburma had written a letter to CDMO (chief district medical officer), Puri on August 8 last year recommending transfer of another doctor in place of Madhavilata Pradhan. Later the same MLA had sent a letter recommending that she (Madhavilata) should not be disturbed and should continue in her post.

Reacting to NCW's recommendation of a CBI probe into the matter, Dasburma said: "I welcome any investigation ... be it CBI. However, it should also be probed under which circumstances the NCW made this recommendation after seven months of the incident."
