NEW DELHI: Despite intense political pressure, the government is still not ready to show its cards on how it will vote in the draft resolution on Sri Lanka. Official sources said that it was too early to reveal India’s position, as “the earliest that it comes to vote is on March 23”.“ There could be changes (in the resolution) or even whether it comes for vote at all,” said a senior government official. India is constrained in putting too much pressure on Sri Lanka, as it faces the looming Chinese shadow over the island nation. China already is the largest foreign aid giver to Sri Lanka and its rehabilitation of Hambantota port had raised Indian hackles. On the other hand, India is Lanka’s largest trading partner. For India, the best-case scenario would be if the resolution did not come to vote at all – but this is unlikely. Therefore, senior Indian diplomats in Geneva are trying to get a resolution worded that will be palatable to both countries: India and Sri Lanka.
