Left sees nothing right at UPA meet
At the first meeting after four months of boycott, the Left parties will oppose the opening of the retail sector to FDI on Thursday.

New Delhi: The Left parties are taking part in the United Progressive Alliance coordination committee for the first time after a gap of four months.

But the return is likely to be stormy as CPM general-secretary Prakash Karat said on Wednesday that they would take up several issues at the meeting with the UPA on Thursday.

The Left wants the government to avoid voting on Iran when the UN meets next to discuss the country?s nuclear ambitions. India will be voting on this issue in November.

Another issue of discontent is foreign direct investment in the retail sector.

They have also strongly criticised the Manmohan Singh Government on the foreign policy front, especially in context of the government?s stand on WTO.

Left representatives are scheduled to meet Commerce Minister Kamal Nath on Thursday regarding the WTO issue.

"There are some serious issues that the government must consider. If the government thrusts branded multinational goods on the people, it will affect small producers," CPI national-secretary D Raja said.

"The move will cause havoc in the urban development sector and the prices of real estate will escalate," D Raja added.

D Raja suggests FDI in manufacturing sector as it would create more jobs and bring in new technology in the country.

The Left parties will ask the government to consider their suggestions and oppose the developed countries as the provisions in the WTO agreement in the current form are discriminatory and against the interests of the developing countries.
