New Delhi: Nine people have died and more than 30 people suffered injury after four-storey building collapsed in Mumbai on Friday. 21 families were trapped when this four-storey residential building collapsed on Dockyard road early in the morning.

"I was sleeping with my brother when I heard a huge sound. We went out and saw the building had collapsed," said Nitin Prabhakar, eyewitness.

The BMC has said that its records show that the building was 32-year-old and also admitted that it was dilapidated.

"The building had been assessed at different points of time by our engineers and it reflected in some categories of dangerous buildings," said Sitaram Kunte, BMC chief.

The BMC officials have said that there could have been some unauthorized construction in the mezzanine floor. However, local politicians hit out at the BMC, saying said that it had been apathetic despite being warned of the danger.

"We complained to them but instead of shifting people out, they gave us reasons for why they couldn't," Yamini Jadhav, corporator.

Meanwhile, around 100 people have died in the building collapses in 2013 in Mumbai-Thane belt and despite a rap from the CAG, the state government is yet to come up with a comprehensive prevent for such tragedies.
