New Delhi: The ninth day of the US Open saw the biggest upset so far in the tournament at Flushing Meadows. World No. 2 Rafael Nadal was knocked out of the tournament in the fourth round by an inspired performance from fellow Spaniard David Ferrer.

In a match dominated by powerful rallies, Nadal won the first set before losing the match in four sets 7-6, 4-6, 6-7, 2-6. After the loss Nadal dropped to the ground.

Nadal was in trouble throughout the match and grimaced between points and even grabbed his foot. He also seemed to be cramping.

The Spaniard came into the tournament carrying a injury in his left knee.

The defeat ended the chances of a potential third consecutive Grand Slam final between Nadal and No. 1 Roger Federer with Ferrer entering only the second Grand Slam quarter-final of his career.

Ferrer will face No. 20 Juan Ignacio Chela with Federer taking on Andy Roddick. No. 3 Novak Djokovic will play No. 17 Carlos Moya and No. 4 Nikolay Davydenko plays No. 10 Tommy Haas.
