Bangalore prays to the largest Ganesha
At 14 ft high and 16 ft wide, Dodda Ganapthi temple is the largest monolithic Ganesha idol in the country.

Bangalore: Lord Ganesha is worshipped in many forms across the country. In Karnataka Ganesha is worshipped as the giver of strength and courage.

The Dodda Ganapthi temple in Bangalore believes in celebrating it big.

"The temple was established 400 years ago in Kempe Gowda's time. The idol is self-installed. It was very small at that time, it was growing all the time and now it has stopped growing," says the main priest of the Dodda Ganapathi temple.

It doesn't get any bigger than the Dodda Ganapathi temple on Bull temple road in Bangalore, which is home to the Dodda Ganesha or Big Ganesha - the largest monolithic Ganesha idol in the country.

An expanded consciousness, a depiction of strength and a sense of truth is what the elephant God at the Dodda Ganapathi temple stands for. At 14 ft high and 16 ft wide, it can't get bigger than this.

The temple is reminiscent of the 16th century Dravidian style architecture and sees devotees throng its premises in hundreds every day. And during the annual Ganapathi season, special pujas are performed here.

It takes over 20 liters of milk to bathe the idol everyday and different decorations or alankaras are done during the week.

The most famous one being the butter coating. Over 100 kilos of butter is used for this purpose, which is then broken and distributed to devotees the next day.
