Thirteen-year-old Bhavani studied in 3rd standard near her house in Venketeswara Colony in Hyderabad. Her parents tried to educate her despite odds. But when her father died, economic condition in the family forced her to drop out. Her mother sent her to work as a domestic help to supplement the family income. When CRY and its partner Janvani working in the area came to know of this they counselled both Bhavani and her mother to send the child back to school. Bhavani had been working as domestic help for 3 years and getting back to school was something she had lost hope of “I was keen on studying and decided to get back to school after I was explained the importance of education and stories about how teachers can be friendly, and making new friends,” Recalls Bhavani.Today, Bhavani is a school goer. She has been enrolled in 4th standard. This is just one story of a child getting back to school. But there are thousands of Bhavani’s who continue to work instead of being in school. CRY has been working for over 30 years to tackle the root causes that keep millions of children at work and not in school. CRY works to mobilise communities, school and government authorities to send their children to school and not to work.
