German World Cup-winning midfielder Toni Kroos announced his return to the national side ahead of the 2024 edition of the European Championships scheduled to be hosted by Germany.

The midfielder who has not been part of the national side for the last three years, following their Euro exit returned to selection at the request of head coach Julian Nagelsmann, who has been tasked with the challenge of rebuilding the historically successful side which has underperformed on the big stage in recent times.

“Hey folks, short and sweet, I’ll be playing for Germany again from March,” the midfielder said on his Instagram handle.

“Why? Because I was asked by the coach and I’m up for it,” the post continued.

“I’m sure that much more is possible with the team at the European Championship than most people think right now,” he added.

Kroos was a crucial cog in Jochaim Low’s World Cup-winning Germany squad in the year 2014 and will look to replicate his form at the upcoming bg-ticket event at home.

The 34-year-old was not part of the German side that travelled to Qatar for the 2022 edition of the FIFA World Cup as Die National Elf suffered a humiliating early exit, under the aegis of former Bayern Munich coach Hansi Flick.

The DFB stuck with Flick despite the World Cup debacle but ran out of patience with the 58-year-old on the back of a string of poor results after the showpiece tournament.

Nagelsmann, another former Bayern Munich coach has been brought in to kindle the winning spirit that the nation has been traditionally associated with and will look to give a good account of themselves in front of a passionate home crowd come June.

The UEFA continental showpiece is slated to begin on the 15th of June with the hosts kicking things off against Scotland at the Allianz Arena in Munich.
