Beijing: Norway who won women's football gold at Sydney 2000 defeated defending champions USA 2-0 in Group G while hosts China edged Sweden 2-1 in Group E.
The United States who won gold in 1996 and 2004 got off to a nightmare start when Norway scored after just one minute. They then added a second just three minutes later to get their campaign off to the perfect start.
Meanwhile in Group E, China scored late in the second half to sink Sweden 2-0 and draw level with Canada at the top of the pool.
And finally, North Korea carved out a 1-0 win over Nigeria in Group F.
