New Delhi: The trio of Mahesh Gawli, Climax Lawrence and Deepak Mandal have once again being nominated by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) for the prestigious Arjuna Award.

Last year too, the Indian FA had sent the names of the three players to the sports ministry along with East Bengal’s left winger Renedy Singh.

Arjuna award is conferred by the President of India to sportspersons who have excelled in the last three years at the international arena, with an outstanding display in the very year they are being nominated.

The award was instituted by the Government of India way back in 1961.

It’s been a long time, since a football player has been honoured with the exalted award.

The last time a footballer was awarded was back in 2002, when the legendary striker IM Vijayan won it.

From the current crop of players, only Indian skipper Bhaichung Bhutia has the honour having won it in 1998.
