'If it Goes Well, Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich': Xabi Alonso's Dreams Of Managing His Former Clubs
Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has suggested that Bayer Leverkusen manager Alonso aspires to coach the clubs he represented as a player in the future.

Xabi Alonso reportedly has a long-standing desire to become the manager of Liverpool and Bayern Munich. The former Spanish midfielder has enjoyed tremendous success with both clubs during his playing days. After announcing his retirement in 2017, Alonso decided to pursue a career as a football manager. He was appointed as the coach of the Real Madrid youth team in the following year before becoming the manager of the Real Sociedad B team in July 2019.

Alonso is currently at the helm of Bayer Leverkusen, whom he joined in the 2022-23 season by replacing Gerardo Seoane. The German club has shown significant growth under his guidance. In the current Bundesliga standings, Bayer Leverkusen hold the top spot with 55 points in 21 matches. They are 5 points ahead of reigning champions Bayern Munich.

Alonso’s work has reportedly impressed several major European outfits, with two of his former clubs interested in his service. The 42-year-old may succeed Jurgen Klopp to become the next Liverpool boss as the latter is set to vacant the role at the end of the season. The Premier League club is understood to have developed an interest in Alonso, considering his success with Bayer Leverkusen. According to a report by the Mirror, Alonso has a clause in his current managerial contract that can help him secure a move to Liverpool.

The outlet further claimed that Alonso’s strategy has also impressed Bayern Munich, who are seeing him as a replacement for Thomas Tuchel. Amid speculations about his future job, Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has revealed Alonso’s dream to manage three of his former clubs including Real Madrid.

During a recent interaction on the BBC’s The Football News Show, Balague said, “I’ll tell you a little secret. When he (Xabi Alonso) went to Bayer Leverkusen, he told his agent ‘Do you know what, I am thinking that if it doesn’t go well at Bayer Leverkusen, I’ll go back to Real Sociedad. But if it goes well, from here, it’s Liverpool, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich’. Let me add Manchester City to the equation and that’s where Alonso could go next. When, is a different matter,” quoted by the Mirror.

When Alonso was asked about his future plans earlier this year, he said, “At the moment, I am really happy here and enjoying my work here. I feel I am in a great place and I am enjoying it. It is the right place.”

The footballer-turned-manager, however, spoke about his dream job at Liverpool, saying, “Yeah for sure I have dreamt of that. First, I have to prove myself and to prepare. If I decide somewhere along the way to take my chances as a manager, my link, my commitment and my passion with Liverpool is there.”

Alonso agreed to a contract extension with Bayer Leverkusen in August 2023. As per the current deal, he is slated to stay at BayArena till 2026.
