Portuguese football manager Jose Mourinho has quashed claims linking him with a potential return to Manchester United. While speaking exclusively to Rio Ferdinand Presents Five on YouTube, Mourinho was asked if he had unfinished business at his former club. The Portuguese coach responded quickly as he said, “No, no, no, no". To this Ferdinand replied by saying, “Another myth busted". Mourinho had previously coached United from 2016 to 2018 but was then sacked after falling out with his players. Since his departure, the rumours of a potential return were always around. These rumours grew especially strong after getting sacked by Roma in January this year because of an underwhelming season.
Jose Mourinho’s sacking at Roma was a move that wasn’t anticipated by many fans, especially after the Portuguese coach won the Italian side a UEFA Conference League in 2022. The coach has now been out of a managerial job for exactly a month. While most managers welcome a small break, Jose already has his mind set on a new challenge. This is what he had to say about working – “If I can work tomorrow, I’d work tomorrow…I don’t enjoy any day without work." He then joked about how he never understood ‘sabbatical time’ as a break would always end up depressing him. “I don’t understand people that speak about sabbatical time, as sabbatical time gives me only one thing – depression."
In the same interview, Jose Mourinho also talked about how good things could soon start to roll in for Manchester United. The 61-year-old has complete faith in Sir Jim Ratcliffe whom he claims to know ‘very well’. Sir Ratcliffe is a British billionaire who is currently awaiting the ratification of his 25 per cent stake in United by the Football Association. As per the former United coach, Sir Ratcliffe would add a lot to the team in terms of experience. “I know Sir Jim Ratcliffe. I know him very well, we had a good relationship from years ago…He comes with experience from other experiences…I have a good feeling that things can go in the right direction".
Widely regarded as one of the Premier League greats, Jose Mourinho has coached three teams in England. He was mostly known for his time at Chelsea and how he turned the side into a major footballing power. He won three league titles with the Blues before leaving in 2015. In the following year, Mourinho joined Manchester United and won the EFL Cup, Community Shield and the UEFA Europa League. His last stint in England came with Tottenham where spent two seasons. It is the only club in his managerial career that has failed to win a piece of silverware with him at the helm.
