2nd Test: Another Injury Scare for India as Shubman Gill Hurts Finger, Won't Take Field on Day 4
India batter Shubman Gill hurt his right index finger while fielding on the second day of the ongoing Vizag Test.

Shubman Gill will not be taking the field on the fourth day’s play of the ongoing 2nd Test between India and England in Vizag. Gill hurt his right index finger while fielding on Day 2 of the contest.

On the other hand, England have also been handed an injury concern with their batter Joe Root breaking his little finger after getting hit during a practice session on Sunday. The injury got worse when he was fielding in the slip cordon and was hit by the ball after an edge from Shreyas Iyer’s bat.

Gill scored a century in the second innings to help India set England a target of 399 runs with the hosts eyeing a series-levelling win after losing the opener in Hyderabad.

Gill made 104 off 147 to overcome a lean phase that raised questions over his spot in the Test team.

India are already depleted for the ongoing contest with allrounder Ravindra Jadeja and batter KL Rahul not playing due to injuries.

Jadeja hurt his hamstring while taking a quick single in the first Test while Rahul complained of pain in his right quadriceps.

Meanwhile, England have resumed their chase after finishing Day 3 at 67/1 with Zak Crawley and nightwatchman Rehan Ahmed the two unbeaten batters.

Speaking after the day’s play, Gill said the morning session will be crucial in deciding which team will edge ahead in the contest.

“It’s about 70-30 at the moment, the morning session is a big one. We’ve seen some movement for the fast bowlers, I think if we get the ball in the right areas we’ll be okay,” Gill said.

The 24-year-old said the pitch isn’t easy for batting.

“As the game on, it will have variable bounce as we saw today. It is not turning as much as the other pitches but it is definitely doing something. It is not easy to score runs here,” Gill said.
