Pawar's hint to Maya: 'You can't shut off retail chains'
No state can close any establishment unless it violates law, said Pawar.

New Delhi: Mayawati’s anti-retail store policy almost spelled ruins for Mukesh Ambani’s retail venture in Uttar Pradesh. However, Union Consumer Affairs Minister Sharad Pawar has now come to Ambani’s rescue.

Pawar, commenting on Mayawati’s order to shut all Reliance Fresh stores across UP, said, no state can permanently close any establishment unless it violates any law.

The development could boost the morale of Reliance Retail, which is feeling the heat. "As per the laws, I don't think that any state government can take decision to close any establishment permanently, unless there is a violation of an Indian law," Pawar was quoted by PTI.

The direction to shut shop have also come from Kerala government after much violence was incited by the local traders against the stores.

Mayawati said that the Reliance Stores must be shut because these are instigating violence among the local traders. The UP CM also cited her stand of not supporting any policy that is ‘anti-farmer’.

Responding to Mayawati’s statements Pawar said, “Law and order is the subject and prerogative of the state government. They have got every right to take any decision to maintain the law and order."

Pawar's comments assume significance in the wake of reports that the Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries group company had decided to go slow on its roll out.

Ambani’s retail stores are making profits and infact have pulled a major share out of the unorganized retail market. The local vendors and distributors have been protesting the stores since their inception.

Pawar said he could understand closure of establishment for a few hours or days due to law and order, but not permanently. "I am confident that this will not be a permanent one."

The minister said the Department of Consumer Affairs has no right to take any action in this regard, adding that respective state governments have taken necessary action.
