Taiwan Hit by Strongest Quake in 25 Years

In what is termed to be the strongest shake to the island in decades, Taiwan was hit by an earthquake of magnitude-7.5 on Wednesday raising concerns all over the globe. At least nine people were killed and thousands were injured by a powerful earthquake that damaged dozens of buildings.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday expressed anguish at the loss of lives in Taiwan, conveying India’s solidarity with the “resilient” people of the country.

Taking to X, he wrote, “Deeply saddened by the loss of lives due to earthquakes in Taiwan today. Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured. We stand in solidarity with the resilient people of Taiwan as they endure the aftermath and recover from it.”

Notably, dozens of people were believed to be safe but unreachable in areas cut off by massive landslides triggered by the quake — many in tunnels that cut through the mountains that bisect the island from north to south.
