However, the 140-character limit on public tweets will remain in place.

A little later than expected, but Twitter has kept its promise of lifting the 140-charater limit for Direct Messages (DMs). Twitter had first announced its intention of lifting the character limit on DMs in June this year and had said it would be rolled out to users from July.

The lift of the character limit on DMs was announced by Sachin Agarwal, product manager at Twitter, in a post on the official Twitter blog. "You can now chat on (and on) in a single Direct Message, and likely still have some characters left over," he said in the post.

However, the 140-character limit on public tweets will remain in place. "You may be wondering what this means for the public side of Twitter. In a word, nothing. Tweets will continue to be the 140 characters they are today," said Agarwal. Also "sending and receiving Direct Messages via SMS will still be limited."

Direct messages in other rival social networks like Facebook and LinkedIn did not have such length limits. Experts say the growing popularity of direct messaging platforms such as WhatsApp and Facebook, has prompted Twitter's decision.

This change in DMs begins rolling out Wednesday across Twitter's Android and iOS apps, on twitter.com, TweetDeck, and Twitter for Mac and it will continue to roll out worldwide over the next few weeks.
