Ravi Shastri’s commentary during the 1st Test of the India-New Zealand series has left the internet in splits. Shastri has given the audience several memorable moments while on air.
He was at his wittiest best during the ongoing Bengaluru Test, commenting on a fan who was having ice cream in the stands.
Commentating alongside Sunil Gavaskar, Shastri described the supporter as a ‘big unit’.

Just as the camera focused on this particular section of fans at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, one of them attempted to hide the ice cream cone.
The gesture sparked a reaction from Shastri and Gavaskar who were on commentary duty.
“It is hot, you need that ice cream with someone hiding behind. He’s a big unit but where is the ice cream, boy?” Shastri said.
Gavaskar also played along and said, “He is hiding the ice cream as someone from his family must have told ‘you must not be eating ice cream’ so he is hiding it.”
Shastri’s neat work with the microphone has been a stuff of legend.
Only last year, he was described as the ‘King of Commentary’ by Aaron Finch. Heaping praise on the Indian cricketer during the Big Bash League (BBL), he said, “He [Shastri] is the King of Commentary and voice of cricket for such a long time.”
Coming back to the opening Test of the series between India and New Zealand, the hosts were bowled out in the first innings for 46 runs in Bengaluru. A magnificent 150 from Sarfaraz Khan in the second innings and 99 from Rishabh Pant helped them crawl back.
Virat Kohli and skipper Rohit Sharma also scored fifties.
