GIMP, the free open source Photoshop alternative, turns 20
GIMP's availability was first announced 20 years ago on November 21, 1995.

Photoshop is arguably the best image editing software out there, but then it comes with a hefty price tag attached. Most of the free Photoshop alternatives pale in comparison to Adobe's 25-year-old software, but the feature-laden GIMP is the choice of many. Also it comes with an unbeatable price tag of Rs 0.

GIMP (General Image Manipulation Program, that will later be redefined as 'GNU Image Manipulation Program') turned 20 on November 21. On that day 20 years ago, University of California student Peter Mattis (co-creator of GIMP along with Kimball Spencer) announced the availability of the software.

GIMP is open source and is available for Windows, OS X and GNU/Linux. The learning curve, however, may be a little steep for those used to other imaging editing software.

Because GIMP is open source there are a number of variants and derivatives of the software. Some variants, such as GimPhoto and GIMPshop, attempt a Photoshop-like user interface.

A new revamped GIMP website was launched to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the software.
