For two iPhone generations now, Apple has been packing an older chipset with the vanilla iPhone models. This was the case with the iPhone 14 generation when the iPhone 14 Pro debuted with the A16 Bionic, but the vanilla iPhone 14 continued to ship with the older A15 Bionic.
The same happened this year with the iPhone 15 generation; the iPhone 15 Pro models featured the new 3nm-based A17 Pro chip, while the vanilla iPhone 15 got the A16 Bionic from the previous year. This has likely been Apple’s way to create a notable difference between the two and potentially prevent the vanilla models from cannibalising the sales of the Pro models.
However, a new report by MacRumors suggests that this could change soon with the iPhone 16 generation, as early leaks point towards all four new iPhone models using A18 branded chipsets This was reportedly spotted in the early builds of iOS 18.
Internally referred to as the D47, D48, D93, and D94, the iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, respectively, may pack the new system-on-chip, or SoC, called the t8140, which is said to be the internal code for the A18 chipsets.
That said, Apple could use the A18 branding for both the vanilla and Pro iPhone 16 models, but it may create a difference — like the one that currently exists — by calling one chipset A18 Pro and another simply A18. This may lessen the blow that Apple faces for not bringing the latest and greatest chip for all models but nonetheless create a notable difference in terms of performance and features to separate them.
It is important to note that there is still a considerable amount of time until the release of the new iPhone 16 models, and Apple’s plans may change. Therefore, it is important to take this information with a grain of salt.
