Mohanlal has acted in more than 400 films in his decades-old career.

We are aware of the level of fame Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Rajinikanth carry, and the love they receive from their fans. However, there is one superstar in the South film industry, who can easily match the stardom of the biggest names. He is Mohanlal Vishwanathan Nair, one of the biggest names in the Malayalam industry. Time and again, he has proven his acting prowess in not only the Malayalam film industry but also in Bollywood, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada film industries.

He has appeared in more than 400 films, across a number of genres. He made his official debut in the film industry with the romantic movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal, in 1980. He played the role of a villain in the film. He made his debut in Bollywood with the 2002 gangster film Company. Directed by Ram Gopal Varma, the film also starred Ajay Devgn, Manisha Koirala, and Vivek Oberoi. Mohanlal received the Best Supporting Actor award at the 48th Filmfare Awards, for his performance in the film.

Some of his other notable works also include films like Iruvar, Drishyam, Janatha Garage, His Highness Abdullah, Midhunam, Kilukkam, Lucifer and many more. Iruvar was his first non-Malayalam film released in 1997, which is inspired by the lives of MG Ramachandran and M Karunanidhi. It was directed by Mani Ratnam.

Mohanlal is the recipient of 5 National Awards, and 9 Kerala State Film Awards. In 2001, he was honoured with Padma Shree, and Padma Bhushan in 2019, by the Government of India for his contributions to the Indian cinema. He holds the record for giving most hits in a year, according to more reports.

The 2019 film Lucifer, where Mohanlal played the titular role became the first Malayalam film to earn more than Rs 200 crore at the box office. Directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, the film also starred Vivek Oberoi, Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Indrajith Sukumaran in prominent roles. It was produced by Antony Perumbavoor, under the banner of Aashirvad Cinemas. A sequel to the film is also in the works, titled L2: Empuraan, and is scheduled for a 2025 release.
