New Delhi: An unrelenting Sushma Swaraj on Wednesday upped the ante and took the war with the Congress over the Lalit Modi scandal to the next level. The External Affairs Minister lashed out at the Opposition for hinting that she was biased towards Lalit Modi, as her daughter and husband had represented him in the passport scandal.

"My husband did not take any money in the passport case. My daughter appeared as a junior in the case. My daughter didn't take any money from Lalit Modi. This is not my conflict of interest. What is conflict of interest is (former Finance Minister) P Chidambaram's wife Nalini Chidambaram taking money in the Sarada (chit fund) case," she raged.

Sushma further blamed Chidambaram for the "inaction" under the UPA rule which prevented Lalit Modi from being extradited from UK. "He kept writing to the UK without keeping the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs) in the loop. The UK Finance Department didn't even respond to Chidambaram's letters," she taunted.

Chidambaram, however, hit back saying the Indian High Commissioner was present when he, as the then Finance Minister, had a meeting with Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne.

Sources close to Chidambaram also pointed out that his wife Nalini had not represented Saradha Group in the chit fund scam. She, in fact, had appeared in one case for the IT Department and not against it, the sources said.
