In an embarrassment for the Narendra Modi government in the Rajya Sabha, the opposition got an amendment passed to the President's Address. The amendment regretted omission of the mention regarding laws passed by some state governments imposing restriction on candidates without minimum educational qualification seeking to contest local body elections.
It was moved by Congress MP Gulam Nabi Azad. The amendment was passed as the opposition has majority in the Upper House of Parliament.
The opposition's amendment underscored the point that a large section of the population has been barred by these laws to contest polls for being uneducated.
The amendment passed regretted that President's Address does not contain mention of the minimum qualification imposed for contesting local body elections by Haryana and Rajasthan.
Both are BJP ruled states.
