Ranchi: Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren won the vote on confidence motion in the state Assembly on Thursday. The Soren government got 43 votes in its favour while 37 MLAs voted against the motion after a heated debate in a special Assembly session on Thursday.

The Soren-led Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) government was formed July 13 and he was asked by Governor Syed Ahmad to prove his majority within a week. In the 82-seat Assembly, Soren needed the support of at least 42 MLAs.

JMM with 18 MLAs got the support of 13 members from Congress, five from RJD, one each from Marxist Coordination Committee, Jharkhand Janadhikar Manch, Jharkhand Party, Jai Bharat Samanta Party and three independent MLAs.

While the opposition bench had 38 members - 17 from BJP (excluding the Speaker), 11 from JVM(P), six from AJSU party, two from JD(U), one from CPI (ML-Liberation) and the nominated member from the Anglo-Indian community, JVM-P MLA Nizammuddin Ansari did not turn up with his colleagues alleging that the JMM-Congress combine had abducted him.
