Former Union minister Birender Singh on Monday resigned from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Lok Sabha elections and is likely to join the Congress.
The move comes nearly a month after his son, Hisar MP, Brijendra Singh resigned from Lok Sabha and the saffron party to join the grand old party.
“I have resigned from the primary membership of the BJP and sent my resignation to party chief J P Nadda. My wife Prem Lata, who remained MLA from 2014-2019, has also quit the party. Tomorrow, we will join the Congress,” PTI quoted him as saying at a press conference.
His son Brijendra resigned as MP and joined the Congress citing “compelling political reasons’ on March 10. Brijendra quit the BJP nearly five months after Singh gave an ultimatum to the party at a rally in Jind in October 2023.
The now-former BJP leader Birender Singh joined the saffron camp in 2014 in the presence of the then-party president Amit Shah, leaving the Congress party after over four decades of association.
As per reports, the father-son duo used to oppose the BJP’s stance on various issues in the past.
In 2020, they aligned with the protesting farmers in demanding the withdrawal of the now-repealed farm laws. Similarly, both the leaders were openly supporting the wrestlers who protested against former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief and BJP MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh amid allegations of sexual harassment.
Earlier this week, former MLA Kuna Srisailam Goud quit the BJP and joined the grand old party on Friday.
Goud joined Congress in the presence of Chief Minister and PCC president A Revanth Reddy, AICC in charge of party affairs in Telangana Deep Dasmunsi and other leaders.
