Chennai: DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Wednesday mounted pressure on the Karnataka government to challenge the Karnataka High Court judgement acquitting J Jayalalithaa in 19-year-old disproportionate assets case.
Karunanidhi said that the legal experts, activists and journalists have pointed out various loopholes and discrepancies in the Karnataka High Court verdict that acquitted Jayalalithaa.
He said one will have to wait for Karnataka government's move to fight corruption in high places.
The statement came at a time when the AIADMK supremo is gearing up to assume office of the chief minister once again. Unconfirmed reports suggested that the swearing-in could be on May 23.
On May 11, Karnataka High Court acquitted Jayalalithaa and said assets were not found to be significantly higher than her known sources of income.
While going though the evidence presented against Jayalalithaa, the Justice CR Kumaraswamy observed that assets were only Rs 2.82 crore more than her income which was a little more than Rs 34.76 crore. The court pointed out that Jayalalithhaa's income during the period which the case relates to was Rs 34,76,65,654 whereas her assets were worth Rs 37,59,02,466. So the assets were Rs 2,82,36,812 more than her known sources of income which is 8.12% more than what she earned.
