Sharmila Tagore is ‘happy’ and ‘honoured’ as her 2023 movie Gulmohar has won the Best Film National Award 2024. Moments after the announcement was made, News18 Showsha spoke exclusively to the veteran actress when she expressed happiness and congratulated her entire Gulmohar team.
“I had just sat down for lunch when I received the news. I’m so, so happy. I immediately called up Rahul, our director, and then Manoj. We all kept in touch even after the film was released. Simran, Kavita, Utsavi, Rahul, Manoj and I became like a family. The only person I couldn’t keep in touch with was Suraj Sharma as he stays really far away,” Sharmila told us.
“But imagine, what a big win it is for Rahul. Gulmohar is his first film and this honour really means a lot to him. The film also won for Best Dialogues. It was sheer joy speaking those beautiful lines. I had a great time shooting for this film and shooting for those scenes with Amol Palekar,” she added.
The veteran actress further expressed her gratitude towards the National Film Awards 2024 jury and the government of India. “We received so much love and appreciation for Gulmohar when it was released and that is getting continued even now. This win is proof that if we put in hard work and create something beautiful, it will always be rewarded. I’m so happy for all of us. I would like to sincerely thank the jury who must have deliberated on this for hours and to the government of India,” she said.
Gulmohar also marked Tagore’s return to the screens 13 years after Break Ke Baad. It won her wide critical acclaim for her sensitive portrayal of a matriarch of a family who’s revealed to be queer. Talking about the same, the veteran actress concluded by saying, “I’m definitely even more elated as I got this award for a film I did after not acting for so many years. I wouldn’t like to call it a comeback. We’re so happy with all the love that we’re receiving.”
Gulmohar is a Star Studios production in association with Chalkboard Entertainment and Autonomous Works. The film’s original music is composed by Siddhartha Khosla and also stars Simran, Suraj Sharma, Amol Palekar, and Kaveri Seth, amongst others. The film was highly praised by the fans too and received positive reviews from critics. The family drama revolves around the multi-generation Batra family who is all set to move out of their 34-year-old family home.
