ADG (Law and Order) Brijlal says Tiwari made the confession in custody.

Lucknow: Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Shekhar Tiwari has reportedly confessed his involvement in the lynching of an Uttar Pradesh Public Works Department (PWD) engineer.

Additional Director General (Law and Order) Brijlal on Friday said that Tiwari made the confession in police custody.

"The MLA has confessed to his involvement in the murder of the PWD engineer in Auraiya district during interrogation in the police remand", Brijlal was quoted as saying by PTI in Lucknow.

Brijlal said investigations have also revealed the involvement of the MLA's wife Vibha Tiwari's hand in destroying evidence in the case. Vibha Tiwari, who is also Auraiya district panchayat president, is absconding.

He said a notice had been served to her to record her statement in the case. However, "she is still not traceable and we are looking for her", the ADGP said.

On Thursday, police had recovered a blood-stained baton, and an electric wire used to bludgeon and torture the PWD engineer Manoj Gupta in Auraiya before he was killed.

The BSP MLA and his supporters allegedly lynched Gupta after he reportedly refused to pay a huge sum to him for the birthday celebrations of UP Chief Minister and BSP chief Mayawati.
