Ravichandran Ashwin has weighed in on the timed-out controversy that occurred in Sri Lanka’s World Cup game against Bangladesh.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin felt that both Angelo Mathews and Shakib Al Hasan were right in their terms.
While Mathews deserved to feel a little disappointed with the decision, Shakib was within the rules of cricket while asking for the appeal.

“Both Shakib and Angelo are right here. One person knew what the rule was. The other person said even though it was in the rules, he just asked if he could let it go since it was due to the helmet malfunctioning. See, the affected party will definitely feel bad in this matter," Ashwin said.
The cricket fraternity was not ready to witness the drama that unfolded in Sri Lanka’s game against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi.
Bangladesh had won the toss and elected to field first in the match. Having lost Kusal Perera early, Sri Lanka struggled during the initial stages of the game as they lost wickets in frequent intervals.
The departure of Sadeera Samrawickrama in the 25th over left the island nation at a total of 135 for four wickets.
It was then that Mathews walked in but left without facing a single delivery.
Bangladesh captain Shakib made a timed-out appeal when Mathews was busy getting his his helmet changed.
Mathews, who had arrived the crease inside two minutes, realised the strap of his helmet has snapped and quickly asked for a replacement.
Shakib appealed for a timed out and Mathews thus became the first cricketer to be dismissed in the manner in international cricket.
“One side is talking about the rules and another side is once again bringing the spirit of cricket", the spinner said.
While Ashwin felt that Shakib was within the rules to ask for the appeal he felt that a player wouldn’t like to be dismissed in that fashion.
“There has been information that Mathews was already warned about the timed-out dismissal. But Mathews was really upset once he got out, rightly so. No one should get out like that, right? Everyone will feel bad when that happens," Ashwin added.
He also spoke about India’s Test match against Australia in Nagpur where he had deliberately tried to walk in slowly one time.
He did so during the final session of the Test match, to pass the day. In that game, Ashwin was also warned by the umpires that he could be timed out if the Australians appealed.
Ashwin is currently representing India at the ongoing ICC ODI World Cup.
The offspinner has not featured in just one match so far.
India pace attack including Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj has been in sensational form.
