Michael Vaughan shared his opinion on Mohammed Shami’s incredible spell against Ben Stokes which was one of the highlights of the thrilling India vs England World Cup clash on Sunday. Shami troubled Stokes with some incredible deliveries outside off stump as the southpaw was beaten on back-to-back deliveries.

The Indian paceman forced Stokes to commit a mistake as he exposed his stumps and got bowled for a 10-ball duck in the big clash.

Vaughan recalled Andrew Flintoff’s spell to Ricky Ponting in the 2005 Ashes while talking about Shami’s over against Stokes and said that the Indian paceman made the English start look very amateurish.

“I remember Andrew Flintoff bowling an over to Ricky Ponting in 2005, which many talk about as a great, great over. Shami’s over to Ben Stokes, who is a great player, and he made him look very amateurish,” Michael Vaughan said on Cricbuzz.

The former England captain also gave his verdict on Joe Root’s dismissal who registered a golden duck after getting dismissed by Jasprit Bumrah.

“It is also just an indication that Joe Root is not in great rhythm. I know it’s the first ball, it’s Jasprit Bumrah, and it’s full and straight. But when you look at Root’s head, it just tilts over and falls over to the off side when he is not in a good rhythm. You could see he wanted to review it. I have no idea why Jonny Bairstow has not gone to him (to say no),” he added.

England have lost five out of the 6 matches thus far and they are chances of making to the semifinals are extremely slim. Skipper Jos Buttler has himself admitted that they are out of the semis race.

Talking about England’s poor show in the tournament, Vaughan said that the thing which saddens him is that England have not competed in the tournament.

“I don’t know a pundit who said at the start of the World Cup that England won’t be in the semi-finals. It’s not just the fact that they are losing; they are not competing. That’s what saddens me,” he concluded.
