Indian pop icon Usha Uthup’s husband Jani Chacko Uthup died in Kolkata on Monday, their family said. Jani, 78, complained of discomfort while watching TV at their residence. He was rushed to a nearby hospital but was declared dead, they said.

A massive cardiac arrest was the trigger for the death, they added. Jani, the second husband of Usha, was associated with the tea plantation sector. They first met at the iconic Trincas in the early ’70s.

Besides Usha, Jani is survived by a son and a daughter. The last rites will be held on Tuesday, the family said.

Earlier this year, Usha Uthup was honoured with the third-highest civilian award, Padma Bhushan, for her contribution to the field of the music industry. Popularly known as the queen of Pop Icon, the singer exclusively spoke to News18 about the recognition. “It’s been an unbelievable moment. The feeling hasn’t sunk in yet. I am thankful to the Government of India for recognising my talent,” she told us.

Following the ceremony, she revealed that she immensely missed her frequent collaborator, the late Bappi Lahiri at the occasion. The iconic duo had joined hands for chartbusters like Ramba Ho, Hari Om Hari, and Koi Yahan Nache Nache, among others. “I missed him so much. I missed both him and RD Burman,” she said in an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha.

The ceremony was held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of the President of India Droupadi Murmu, the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi, the Vice-President of India Jagdeep Dhankhar, and Union Minister for Home Affairs Amit Shah.
