With Delhi elections around the corner, the election commission is trying to go all out to spread awareness about the fundamental right and duty of voting. To encourage the youth to exercise their right to vote, Bollywood star Varun Dhawan and Yami Gautam were invited to the Kamala Nehru College, Delhi University.
The college which is presently the election training center also played host to the Delhi based band 'Astitva'. The election awareness campaign started with a performance from the band of popular movie songs. The band leader Salman Khan urged the girls, most of whom have just turned 18, to go and vote on the 7th and show the political parties what janta wants. The band also sang the patriotic song 'Vande Mataram' to end their performance the response to which was nothing short of overwhelming.
This was followed by a puppet show by puppeteers from the Kathputli Colony of Delhi. It talked about the right and duty of every person to vote regardless of age, sex, religion or community.
Varun Dhawan then came up on the stage much to the pleasure and delight of the girls who had by now broken into a unison of 'Varun, Varun, Varun........'. The actor was accompanied by the lead actress Yami Gautam from his upcoming film 'Badlapur'. While addressing the gathering, the actors spoke about the need to exercise their right to vote. Varun Dhawan said, "I've been voting in Mumbai since I was 18. If any one here is really my fan she will go out and vote freely on February 7." Yami agreed with Varun's perspective and said that she too has been taking her right to vote seriously in Chandigarh. "I take time out for that one day and go home to vote for the candidate I like," she said.
The actors read out the constitutional pledge for fair voting. They requested the young voters to turn out in large numbers on the voting day and vote without being influenced by age, sex, religion, cast, community or any other inducements. The actor also took this opportunity to promote his film 'Badlapur'. They threw out music CDs to the screaming crowd of young girls and also danced on 'Jee karda' and the romantic song 'Jeena Jeena' by Atif Aslam, from the upcoming movie.
