Half-Elf Naming Conventions

Borrow from human and elven naming traditions. In DnD, Baldur’s Gate 3, The Lord of the Rings, and other fantasy worlds, half-elves are half-human, half-elf. In general, both humans and elves use a first-last naming structure, and half-elves typically have names with influences from both races. According to Hamlet, “Half-elves are part of both human and elf worlds, and, in a sense, neither world. A good half-elf naming convention would be to have one name of the elvish variety–longer, more melodic, [and] possibly tying in their background—and a human name [that's] a little more basic or expected, [and] shorter. For example, Jason Valladiria or Catalinda Smith.” These naming structures vary depending on the source material, so look at the names of both elves and humans in the world you’re creating a character for. If you’re developing your own world, those naming conventions are up to you! If your character was raised by elves, they might be given a full Elvish name. If they were raised by humans, they might have a fully human name. Looking for more elf name ideas? Check out our Drow Names article or our Dark Elf Name Generator!
