In a bizarre turn of events, a 31-year-old woman was arrested in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar area for breaking into her mother’s home and stealing jewellery and cash, worth lakhs, kept there for her younger sister’s wedding. The woman told police that she staged the heist because she was ‘jealous and angry’ of her mother’s love for her younger sister.
The incident took place on January 30 in the Sevak Park area of Uttam Nagar, when accused Shweta stole the housekeys and broke into the home, wearing a burka, in her mother’s absence.
Shweta was caught after her mother, Kamlesh, approached the police about a robbery at her home.
In her complaint, Kamlesh told police that while she was away from her house between 2 pm and 2:30 pm on January 30, gold and silver jewellery worth lakhs and Rs 25,000 in cash were stolen from her home.
During the probe, police found no signs of forced entry into the house as all locks on the main door and cupboard were found to be intact.
While going through the video footage from CCTV cameras installed in the area, police spotted a woman, wearing a burqa, entering the home suspiciously.
Delhi police’s technical investigation led them to Kamlesh’s elder daughter Shweta, who moved out of the home a few days ago.
During questioning, Shweta told police that planned the robbery because her mother loved her younger sister more. She claimed she had some debt to pay and the feelings of jealousy and hatred prompted her to plan the burglary, police said.
Some of the jewellery Shweta stole was hers, which she had asked her mother to keep, while the rest were made by her mother for her sister’s wedding.
To get the heist plan rolling, Shweta moved out of her mother’s home in January. To help her settle, Kamlesh would visit Shweta’s place after her younger daughter left for work.
Taking advantage of this, Shweta stole her mother’s house keys on the day of the loot and stepped out of her new home on the pretext of buying vegetables.
She then reportedly went into a public toilet and wore a burqa there before going to her mother’s house. There she entered the house using her keys and ran away with jewellery and cash.
According to police, when Kamlesh informed Shweta about the robbery, she pretended to be worried and thought no one would suspect her.
After her arrest, she also told police that she had sold the jewellery. However, cops managed to recover them.
