KOCHI: The UDF has decided to request the Election Commission of India to advance the Piravom Assembly bypoll, scheduled for March 18, by a day. The decision was taken at the UDF leadership meeting held here.“The election is on a Sunday, and it will affect polling. Voting is usually held on a working day,” Chief Minister Oommen Chandy told mediapersons after the meeting. Chandy admitted that the election will be a referendum on the performance of the Congress-led UDF Government and added that the UDF accepted the view of CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan and other opposition leaders in this regard. He also expressed confidence that the UDF will win the battle.“The people in the state have recognised that the UDF Government in its eight months has performed better than the previous LDF government,” he said. The difference of opinion among its allies has not affected governance and the UDF is moving ahead united. The UDF election convention will be held at Piravom on February 24.UDF convenor P P Thankachan, KPCC president Ramesh Chennithala, ministers K Babu, P K Kunhalikkutty and V K Ibrahim Kunju took part in the press meet.
