Two women have been beaten up by members of a rightwing group in Mandsaur in Madhya Pradesh for allegedly carrying beef, triggering protests in Parliament by Opposition members.
The women were slapped, kicked and abused by the activists on Tuesday after police detained them on a tip-off that they were carrying beef.
The meat sample was sent to a lab where it turned out that it was buffalo meat. Slaughter of cows is banned in MP, but buffalo meat is not illegal.
The state government assured that strict action will be taken against the attackers, but reports said nobody was arrested till Wednesday morning.
"No one should take law in their own hands. Those who are held responsible will be held guilty and action will be taken against them," State Home Minister Bhupendra Singh said.
The incident was raised in the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday by Congress MPs who demanded that the Centre should step in to check increasing attacks by cow vigilantes on Dalits and Muslims.
The attack comes just two weeks after a group of Dalits in Gujarat were tied up and beaten by cow vigilantes triggering protests in different parts of the country.
