Hours before 1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon's hanging on July 30, his brother and one of India's 'most wanted' terrorist Mushtaq 'Tiger' Memon rang up his family and spoke about taking revenge for his brother's death. According to sources, Tiger Memon called on the landline number of the family just one-and-half hours before his younger brother Yakub was hanged.
The phone call was intercepted by Mumbai Police and the central agencies were informed. Security agencies in Mumbai and Delhi have confirmed that Tiger called the Memon family. Sources add that Mumbai Police officials listening to the conversation identified Tiger's voice. Concerns have also been raised about the prospect of retaliatory terror attacks as he promised he would avenge Yakub's death.
Meanwhile, Supreme Court judge Deepak Misra, who was part of the three-member bench which rejected Yakub's plea leading to his execution has received a death threat. Delhi Police has registered a case and initiated a probe after an anonymous letter was received at the residence of Justice Misra. The letter threatens Justice Misra and says he will be targeted even if security is increased.
According to investigating agencies, Tiger Memon got Yakub involved in planning and plotting the serial blasts that killed at least 257 people and injured about 700 on March 12, 1993.
Yakub was hanged to death after the Supreme Court dismissed his curative petition against death sentence following an unprecedented legal proceeding which went on throughout the intervening night of July 29-30. The Supreme Court had described Yakub the "driving spirit" behind the 12 coordinated blasts
Yakub Memon's body was buried in a graveyard in Mumbai's Mahim area on the evening of July 30 amidst heavy security. His Yakub's body was interred at the Bada Kabristan in Marine Lines, where his father had also been buried.
Earlier, on July 30 his body was handed over to his brother Suleman and cousin Usman, who had been camping in Nagpur since July 29, after the postmortem.
