DHENKANAL: Thirteen underprivileged children from Dhenkanal have been selected to participate in the third junior men’s/women’s National Footballtennis Championship at Kota, Rajasthan. The championship is being organised by the All India Football-tennis Association from May 18 to 21.Of the 13 children, nine are boys and four girls who have been practising footballtennis in the district for several years now under the guidance of coach Ramakrushna Behera, member of India selection committee of the association. However, in the absence of sponsorship by the State Government, these children might have to forgo the chance to exhibit their talent at the National championship. “We have already deposited the entry fee, but there are no funds for travel and equipment needed for practice. Sadly, the Government is yet to come forward with help,” said Ramakrushna.Association secretary-general Ramavtar said there is accommodation for all the participating students. “The selected candidates will be sent for the international championship to Switzerland and Czech Republic this year,” he said. The selected students for the National championship are Manoj Kumar Sethi, S Kumar, Debiprasad, Sambit Pany, Rajesh Behera, Soumya Ranjan Mohanty, Fax Sahoo, Sidhasankalpa and Kishore Das. The girls are Swagatika Priya Darshini, Monica Singh, Tulasi Behera and Swarna Prava Behera. Their coach has appealed for Government sponsorship for the children.
