KOZHIKODE: Notorious smuggler Rajesh Bharadwaj, who was brought by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) to the state on Monday, was produced before the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Court at Vadakara on Tuesday.Special Judge B Remakanth remanded him to Vadakara sub-jail under the sections 8, 21 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.Rajesh was arrested from Chandigarh in connection with the case pertaining to the seizure of heroin worth Rs 11 crore from Kozhikode and Malappuram districts in 2008. Around 5.396 kilograms of heroin was seized from a house at Kuthiravattom in Kozhikode and about six kilograms of heroin was captured from Edavannappara in Malappuram district.The other accused in the case include Habeeb Rehman of Cheekode in Malappuram, Kiran Kumar and Gurudarsan Singh Rathan Singh of Rajasthan.They were convicted and sentenced to 10 years of imprisonment and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.According to officials, Bharadwaj was the main perpetrator of the crime in which about 15 kilograms of heroin was brought to the state from Kota in Rajasthan and was controlling the operations. He was absconding and the special Court in Vadakara had issued an arrest warrant.
