Ganesh Chaturthi, one of the prominent Hindu festivals that offers tribute to Lord Ganesh, will be celebrated from September 6 to 7, 2024. Amidst the ongoing preparations, according to Local 18 Bengal, the candle artists of Siliguri, North Bengal have come up with a special preparation for this festival. They have prepared laddu-scented candles. Rima Das and Pinkira are two of those artists who have come up with this remarkable idea. Laddus are given preference in these candles because Lord Ganesh loved modaks or laddus. This time, the demand for Laddu-scented candles is huge, not only in North Bengal but also in South Bengal. Rima and Pinkira, hailing from Siliguri, have surprised everyone by making this new type of candle. These candles made in Siliguri are now also being sold in cities like Kuala Lampur, Goa, Kolkata, and Dubai.
Tagore Appreciation Society and West Bengal SC-ST-OBC Development and Finance Corporation started the Luxury Candle Making Programme to empower women hailing from backward sections of society. Through this program, many women are learning to make scented candles and do business. This time, 2 of them, Rima and Pinkira surprised everyone by making laddu-scented candles.
Laddu candle maker Rima Das said, “Lord Ganesh’s favourite food is laddu so we choose laddus first and foremost as prasad for Lord Ganesh’s Puja. I made this laddu-scented candle from that idea. Just as laddus are served as prasad in puja, laddu candles can be used by everyone.” This laddu-scented candle can be delivered to your home at very little cost.
Rima and Pinkira have employed other women as well in this business. As seen in the Local 18 visual, these ladies are helping Rima and Pinkira in making the laddu-scented candles. Both of these entrepreneurs don’t operate in a massive factory to make these innovative candles. They work in a home, thus emphasising the idea of creating something productive with limited resources. The candles are packed in a set of 4 and 6 in different boxes and then sold to the customers.
