Shettar fails to name SHRC chief, members

Tuesday’s meeting chaired by Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar to select a new body for the Karnataka State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) remained inconclusive due to lack of consensus.

The selection committee comprising of the Chief Minister, presiding officers and Opposition leaders of both the houses of state legislature and home minister would meet again on August 30 when it is expected to take a final call.

According to sources, the government has shortlisted names of former Chief Justices of Karnataka High Court Cyriac Joseph and NK Sodhi, former CJ of Kerala High Court SR Bannurmath, former CJ of Bombay High Court MB Shah and former Supreme Court Justice RV Raveendran for Commission chairperson’s post and would have no problem in zeroingin on one name.

But, the real challenge lies in the selection of two members to the human rights panel.

According to sources, there are around 40 contenders, including several retired IAS and IPS officers like S M Jamadar, K V Kongawad, S T Ramesh and Kempaiah.

As per the rules, of the two members to be nominated to the human rights panel one should be drawn from the district judges and another from those fighting for human rights.

The SHRC has been rendered headless since July 25 as the term of incumbent chairman Justice SR Naik and two members ended on that day.
