New Delhi: The Haryana government on Wednesday decided to give Z-plus security to Baba Gurmit Ram Rahim Singh, the chief of Dera Sacha Sauda sect whom Sikhs have accused of blasphemy.
"We have decided to provide him with the Z-plus security cover in view of the threats to eliminate him," Haryana's Additional DGP (CID) P V Rathee told PTI.
A meeting of government officials in Chandigarh decided to provide him with high security considering the furore he had allegedly created by dressing up as Guru Gobind Singh.
The Akal Takht, the supreme temporal and spiritual body of Sikhs, has rejected the Dera’s apology and called it a "shrewd tactic to divert attention".
The Sikh priests have said the social boycott of the Dera would continue and those who had become his followers should return to Sikh mainstream.
In a related development, the Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to accept a petition filed by the Delhi Sikh Gurudwara Management Committee seeking to expedite the CBI probe into the alleged criminal activities of the Dera chief.
A bench of Justices Arijit Pasayat and D K Jain refused to hear the petition on the ground that the Punjab and Haryana High Court was already dealing with the matter.
