Russia dominate European Championships
Olympic champion Tatyana Lebedeva took the glory away from the Devetzi, with a final-round jump of 15.15 meters.

New Delhi: At the European Championships at Gothenburg it was a good day for the Russians but there were some surprises too.

Kim Gevaert won the 100 metres gold to become Belgium's first female European champion. Finishing with a time of 11.06 seconds, Gevaert gave Belgium their first European title in 35 years.

And there was a photo finish for the second place with Yekaterina Grigoryeva nudging out fellow Russian Irina Khabarova to take the silver.

The men's 1500m title was retained by France's Mehdi Baala while world indoor champion Ivan Heshko of the Ukraine took the silver.

In the women's triple jump event Hrisopiyi Devetzi set a new championship record of 15.05 metres in the first round of the competition and looked all set for gold.

But Olympic long jump champion Tatyana Lebedeva took the glory away from the Devetzi, with a final-round jump of 15.15 metres.

There was a bit of a surprise in the men's high jump event as well. Andrey Silnov of Russia took a surprise gold recording a jump of 2.36 metres.

Olympic 400m hurdles champion Fani Halkia was edged out for gold by Yevgenia Isakova. The Russian set a new personal best of 53.93 seconds and took Halkia out in the last stretch..

The last event of the day didn't see any surprises and France's Marc Raquil won the 400m race in 45.02 seconds.
