Rs 435-crore NABARD aid for TN rural infrastructure

The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) has granted Rs 435 crore to Tamil Nadu for rural infrastructure development.

Lalitha Venkatesan, Chief General Manager, NABARD, Chennai Regional Office, the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIFD) is for executing infrastructure projects in irrigation, flood protection, rural connectivity and hostel facilities for backward classes, most backward classes and minorities.

An amount of Rs 63.175 crore had been sanctioned for construction of groynes from Ennore to E Kuppam in Tiruvallur district for protection against floods and linking the Parambikulam Aliyar Project system with the Upper Canal in Tiruppur district to provide irrigation for additional crop area.

The projects will facilitate livelihood to nearly 38,000 fishermen in Tamil Nadu and benefit an ayacut area of 2452.42 hectares. An amount of Rs 329.33 crore has been set aside for 514 rural roads in 31 districts in State. These projects will benefit 1,803 villages comprising of 75.5 lakh rural population.

An amount of Rs 42.509 crore has been alloted for construction of 56 hostels for backward classes, most backward classes and minority community. The cumulative sanction by NABARD, under RIDF-XVIII for 2012-13 is Rs 1256.43 crore, of which Rs 151.2 crore is for storage and warehousing.
